ANNOUNCEMENTS
From the FES Nurse’s Office
Stock up on your COVID tests!
Public Health trends show us that COVID cases spike after school vacations and holiday seasons. It's important to have COVID-19 tests on hand to determine if you have COVID-19 and to prevent spread to others. (It's amazing how many tests you can go through if you have a COVID positive case in your home!)
There are currently two ways to order free COVID tests for your household:
- The Biden administration is offering households in all states one order of 4 free COVID tests. This offer is nationwide, so spread the word to relatives or friends in other states about this information.
- Project Act is offering free tests to Maine residents every month. Order free tests here, then remember to order again next month.
Also, before you throw out any "expired" tests, check to see if your COVID-19 tests' expiration dates have been extended.

Kindergarten - granola bars

ANNOUNCEMENTS
An Important Reminder About FES Pick Up/Dismissal
Below is a diagram outlining the pickup pattern. We ask when parents and guardians enter the access road near the tennis courts they remain all the way on the right side of the road, preferably on the grass. You’ll see in the diagram there is a driveway on the right side of the road. Once individuals picking up pass the driveway they can move over to the left side of the road. Once you pass the driveway this turns into a one-way road.
We understand this is a narrow access road, so it’s our hope that parents and guardians remaining all the way to the right when they enter, then transitioning all the way over to the left, can leave this road mostly open for buses, emergency vehicles, and middle school staff leaving for the day.
If you are picking up your child, do not arrive/enter our campus until 2:45. This is a safety issue. If you arrive early you will be asked to leave. Most days there will be a School Resource Officer (SRO) near the tennis courts to guide you, and answer any questions you may have. Please feel free to reach out to our School Resource Officer (SRO), Officer Amanda Hogg directly at 207-329-5041 or at amanda.hogg@falmouthschools.org.
Thank you for your cooperation!
Attendance Updates
In trying to keep our FES systems consistent with FMS and FHS we will be entering student attendance using the following codes going forward:
A = Absent (excused)
T = Tardy
D = Dismissal
R = Religious Holiday, and/or,
AU = Absent Unexcused.
Per our FES Student and Family Handbook, The following are an example of an absence that is excusable:
A) illness
B) appointments with health professionals
C) observance of religious holidays
D) family emergencies
E) school suspensions
F) special/planned absences for personal reasons approved in advance by the principal.
All other absences are considered unexcused.
Pickup Patrol
If you have a morning appointment, are running late, or will be absent please let us know through PickUpPatrol. When you log into PUP your screen will look like the picture below. To enter an absence hit the small gray arrow pointing to the right and choose Absent. If you are arriving late you will want to click on “Arriving late?”
Next, you will see this screen. Please enter the time you expect to be IN school and the reason for the tardy. This will help us accurately account for all students in a timely manner and allow us to cut down on unnecessary phone calls. We greatly appreciate your help and support!

Schoolwide PJ Day on 12/22!
During the month of November we focused on the "H" of our SHIPS acronym.
S - Show kindness
H - Have respect
I - Include everyone
P - Practice Responsibility
S - Safety
Students were recognized for their outstanding behavior and when they were caught being respectful they were given a sticky note to add to our SHIPS poster in the lobby on their grade level section. Our fifth graders had the most sticky notes and they got to choose the whole school reward! They chose PJ day for our next All School Assembly day on 12/22! So please join us in our WHOLE school PJ day. Thank you, fifth graders, this will be fun!

Reminders from the Nurse’s Office
Medications at School
Please remember that per district policy, any medication, including drops, creams, over-the-counter medications, and prescriptions, must be distributed from the nurses’ office. In order for nurses to legally administer medication at school, we require the following:
- Medication must be in its original container and dropped off by family/caregivers. Students may only transport inhalers or EpiPens.
- A doctor’s order (even for drops, creams, and over-the-counter orals) signed by both a doctor and family/caregivers must be provided to nurses.
- Medications (such as antibiotics) that are short term, no more than 15 consecutive days, with a clearly labeled prescription on the original container, may be administered by nurses if necessary during the school day.
- Nurses must hear from family/caregivers noting the reason for the medication and times/days it should be administered.
For more details, see the district policy JLCD: Administration of Medication to Students.
Absence Due to Illness
Nurses are still monitoring all absences due to illness. When you mark your student “absent” in Pick Up Patrol, please note specific symptoms so that we can determine if they will need a COVID test to return to school.
Head Lice
With students returning to group activities, sports, playdates, and sleepovers we have been made aware of a few cases of head lice. Although they may be a nuisance, head lice don't cause serious illness or carry any diseases. Severe itching of the scalp may indicate the presence of lice and nits. We are encouraging all family/caregivers to check their children for signs and symptoms of head lice. Please contact your student’s PCP if you have questions regarding treatment.

Introducing our new K-2 Administrative Assistant
Hi! My name is Jennifer (Jen) Zinn and I am the new K-2 Administrative Assistant. I am super happy to be here and part of the FES Community. I come with 17 years of office experience, and actually taught Health at FMS 24 years ago. I live in Falmouth with my husband and enjoy all that this beautiful town has to offer. We have two sons, Jack and Emmitt, both graduates of FHS. For me family time is the best time, boating, biking, hiking and skiing.
In case you missed it!
For those unable to attend the Master Planning Presentation & Community Charette on September 28th, please find the presentation and updates on our Campus Master Planning webpage. Likewise, for those unable to attend the October 3rd School Board Workshop presentation and discussion about Pre-K, the presentation slides are available on our Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K) webpage.
We continue to have great weather for spectator sports. You can support our Falmouth Navigators at any of a number of home athletic events (football, soccer, volleyball, and field hockey) throughout the week. Complete Falmouth Athletics calendar available here.

FES Service Club
Calling all 3rd, 4th and 5th Graders, you are invited to join the FES Service Club! We will meet every Monday after school until 4 p.m., beginning on October 24th. During our meetings, we will decide what kinds of projects we want to work on, and carry them out as a team. Come with your community service ideas and ready to work! Please sign up here, or talk with Mrs. Berman or Señora Lowery at the elementary school if you have any questions. Participation is limited to 25 people. We hope to see you there! - Jeannette Berman and Ellen Lowery
Grade 3, 4, & 5 Activities Club
We will be starting our WEEKLY FES Activities Club next Tuesday, (October 4th) and Thursday, (October 6th) from 7:45 AM - 8:30 AM for our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students.
This is a weekly club that will be playing a variety of our favorite physical education and playground games!
The sign-up link for the week will be sent out every week on Monday at 7 PM. The sign-up will be for that week only. Students are invited to pick and choose when they attend. We do ask that students only attend ONE Activities Club session per week to allow the maximum number of students to attend. To allow for safe teacher-student ratio and adequate game time we are capping the number of students at 35 PER SESSION.
Remember, the activities will vary weekly and you do not have to sign up every week. Choose to attend the days and activities that you prefer! The activities will be posted in the gym as well as on the sign up weekly sign up form.
Please do not arrive before 7:45 because there will be no supervision and students will not be allowed to enter until that time.
If you have any questions please feel free to email Mr. Sprague.

From the Nurses
Student Flu Shot Clinic
Falmouth Elementary School will be having a student flu clinic on Tuesday, 10/11 DURING SCHOOL HOURS. This will be the only flu shot clinic we hold this year; we will not be holding an evening clinic this year. We are requiring pre-registration for this event. If you would like your child to receive an influenza vaccine please complete the registration form by Thursday, 10/6/22.
Dental Clinic Opportunity - All Falmouth Schools
A dental program called Mainely Teeth will be providing dental care (routine care and screenings, preventive services, and simple dental treatments) on October 19th-21st, 2022, to children who do not otherwise have a dental home. Services provided are available to students with MaineCare, or students that are uninsured and not established with a dentist. If your student is seeing a dentist regularly, they would not need or qualify for these services. However, if you are having a hard time getting into the community dental clinic or their dentist is no longer accepting MaineCare, Mainely Teeth can see them. If your student does not have MaineCare, these services will be provided for free after a brief financial screening over the phone. Registration and consent forms must be returned by Thursday, 10/6/22. Please read and complete the registration packet or contact your student’s school nurse if you would like us to send you a paper copy.
Free Home COVID Tests
Project Act: Free COVID Tests - These are free and can be ordered monthly. 5 per pack.

Grade 3, 4, & 5 Activities Club
Activities Club is back!
Please do not arrive before 7:45 because there will not be any supervision until that time.
If you have any questions please feel free to email Mr. Sprague.

An Important Message About FES Pick Up/Dismissal
This year, Falmouth Elementary School is implementing a new pick up routine for parents and guardians. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we navigate this transition together.
Thank you for your cooperation - let’s have a great school year!

As a reminder, the Annual Campaign is our main fundraiser of the year, and all funds support programs and activities not covered by the school budget, including events like Ice Cream Social and educational opportunities like field trips. $50 per child is suggested, and our goal is to raise $15,000 by October 15.
